Snow Chain Tech and Tips for Buying

  • Snow chains are specified in various sizes with the most common being 12mm and 16mm. This is the total width of the link and any part of the chain is no wider than these indicated sizes. This is called the Clearance size. 12mm is often recommended for Cars and the 16mm is often recommended for SUV style vehicles.  We do offer sizes as small as 7mm for Cars and 13mm for SUV's for when clearance is an issue.

  • The clearance size is important. Generally, the bigger the chain the more durable, but bigger can create issues once fitted to the wheel. Behind the wheel there are several stationery fixed parts such as suspension parts, brake Lines and mud guards to name a few. These can interfere with or snag the chains. It is important to recognize these fixed hazards in your wheel well. You can check them visually or running your hand over and behind the wheel will give you and idea of how much room there is behind the tyre. We offer chains as small as 7mm to assist with achieving clearance.

  • Tyres are sold using dimensions based on width, aspect ratio (percentage of the width) and Rim diameter measured in inches. i.e. 17” e.g. (235/60-17).  Please be aware that no two brands are exactly the same size & there could be a 5 or 6mm difference in the diameter between 1 and the other. This equates to approx 20mm in circumference. Add tyre wear to this and lose another 6mm and your tyre is approximately 40mm smaller in its circumference than the advertised size.

  • So, when buying Snow chains, do refer to our Recommended Snow Chain Size Chart. We have spent 30 + years developing it. Chains recommended will fit in 95% of circumstances. Additionally, our chains do have adjustability to accommodate for any tyre wear. To give yourself the best chance, make sure your tyres are in good condition. If they are severely worn down you might want to consider replacing them before buying chains.

  • Give yourself a week or two before you set off for your journey or Ski Trip, so you have time to try the chains on. Regardless of when you are travelling, do trial fit your chains once received. Do not wait until you are travelling because if they're wrong its too late to do anything about it.

  • If they are wrong, simply contact us and we will arrange to send you the correct chain. We will pay for the return and send the next set with no additional charge provided they are are returned within 14 Days. (See our Returns policy in the T’s &C’s)

If we believe your choice is incompatible, we will contact you and advise of a solution. Regrettably in 1% of circumstances there is no solution, or the solution is very expensive.
